The company's mandate is to develop, operate and maintain the transmission infrastructure and to undertake bulk purchasing of power from both internal and external generation sources and to deliver the power to bulk power supply points close to load centers from where the distribution company takes the supply for distribution to customers.
The company is also responsible for power systems operations on the national grid, which involves system monitoring and control, matching supply and demand, coordination of equipment outages and monitoring of the inter-connectors to neighbouring utilities in the region through which Zimbabwe receives her imports.
The Parliament of Zimbabwe passed two Acts, the Electricity Act 2002 and the Rural Electrification Fund Act 2002, which ushered in comprehensive reforms in the electricity industry. These reforms have already started accelerating Zimbabwe's power sector development and expansion. The new Electricity Act, allowed for the establishment of the Zimbabwe Electricity Regulatory Commission (ZERC) and the restructuring of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) into a Holding Company.
